There are 2 sets of traditional IN/OUT 5-pin MIDI DIN connectors on the back of the iCM2 labelled: MIDI 1 & MIDI 2.
Each USB Device Jack on the iConnectMIDI2+ also has 4 virtual MIDI ports.
Operation with iPad
Assuming that an iPad, or other iOS device is connected to USB 1 on the iConnectMIDI2+:
If you open your iPad application’s Settings/Preferences for MIDI input/output, you should see 4 iConnectMIDI2+ ports available.
They should be labeled: DIN 1, DIN 2, USB 2 & none.
These port names correspond to the following ports on the iConnectMIDI2+
- DIN 1 - MIDI 1 DIN
- DIN 2 - MIDI 2 DIN
- USB 2 - USB 2 Device Jack
- none – extra MIDI port, by default unassigned
Operation with a computer
Assuming that a computer is connected to USB 2 on the iConnectMIDI2+
If you open your computer application’s Settings/Preferences for MIDI input/output, you should see 4 iConnectMIDI2+ ports available.
They should be labeled: DIN 1, DIN 2, USB 1 & none.
These port names correspond to the following ports on the iConnectMIDI2+:
- DIN 1 - MIDI 1 DIN
- DIN 2 - MIDI 2 DIN
- USB 1 - USB 1 Device Jack
- none – extra MIDI port, by default unassigned
Windows Users please note!
When iConnectMIDI2+ is connected to a Windows operating system, the MIDI ports will be recognized as:
- iConnectMIDI2+ - MIDI 1 DIN
- MIDIIN2/MIDIOUT2 - MIDI 2 DIN
- MIDIIN3/MIDIOUT3 - USB 1 or 2 Device Jack
- MIDIIN4/MIDIOUT4 – extra MIDI port, by default unassigned
If you open Port Routing in iConfig, you see USB Device Jack 1 on the left in the Port window. Displayed under USB Device Jack 1, are the 4 available MIDI ports available for that Device Jack.
The Ports populating the Port window are representing the source of the MIDI messages.
Port Routes (Destinations) is where these intended MIDI messages are being routed to on the iConnectMIDI2+.
Here the 4 available MIDI ports for the 2 USB Device Jacks are labeled as numbered left to right and corresponds to the MIDI ports as:
USB Device Jack 1
If you select DIN 1, you’ll notice on the right, under Port Routes (Destinations) that DIN Jack 1 is enabled (grey).
Any MIDI generated from that connection will route to a device connected to the MIDI 1 DIN on iConnectMIDI2+.
If you select DIN 2, you’ll notice on the right, under Port Routes (Destinations) that DIN Jack 2 is enabled (grey).
Any MIDI generated from that port will route to a device connected to the MIDI 2 DIN on iConnectMIDI2+.
If you select USB 2, you’ll notice on the right, under Port Routes (Destinations) that USB Device Jack 2 - 3 is enabled (grey).
Any MIDI generated from there, will route to a computer (or iOS device) connected to USB 2 on iConnectMIDI2+.
If you select none, you’ll notice under Port Routes (Destinations), that there are no ports enabled. As stated prior, this is an extra MIDI port and can be assigned accordingly.
USB Device Jack 2
Selecting DIN 1 under USB Device Jack 2 in the Port window, you’ll see DIN Jack 1 – DIN 1 is enabled.
Any MIDI generated from that computer will route to a device connected to the MIDI 1 DIN on iConnectMIDI2+.
If you select DIN 2, you’ll notice on the right, under Port Routes (Destinations) that DIN Jack 2 is enabled (grey).
Any MIDI from that computer, will route to a device connected to the MIDI 2 DIN on iConnectMIDI2+.
If you select USB 1, you’ll notice on the right, under Port Routes (Destinations) that USB Device Jack 2 - 3 is enabled (grey).
MIDI generated from that computer, will route to an iPad connected to USB 1 on iConnectMIDI2+.
If you select none, you’ll notice under Port Routes (Destinations), that there are no ports enabled. As stated prior, this is an extra MIDI port and can be assigned accordingly.
DIN 1
If you select DIN 1 in the Port window, USB Device Jack 1 – 1, USB Device Jack 2 -1 & DIN 2 ports are enabled.
Any MIDI from a MIDI device connected to MIDI 1 DIN on iconnectMIDI2+ will pass to iPad (USB Device Jack 1 -1), computer (USB Device Jack 2 – 1) and another MIDI DIN device connected to MIDI 2 on the iConnectMIDI2+.
DIN 2
If you select DIN 2 in the Port window, USB Device Jack 1 – 2, USB Device Jack 2 - 2 & DIN 1 ports are enabled.
Any MIDI from a MIDI device connected to MIDI 2 DIN on iconnectMIDI2+ will pass to iPad (USB Device Jack 1 -2), computer (USB Device Jack 2 – 2) and another MIDI DIN device connected to MIDI 1 on the iConnectMIDI2+.
